BIOS: Immortal Kokedama explores themes of continuity, care and resilience through a moss ball's life cycle drawing parallels to human caregiving and loss. At first, we see a moss ball devoid of life but hidden in its depths is the possibility for growth and rebirth. The digital NFT of the moss ball goes through a cycle of endless growth and death reflecting the ebbs and flows of our lives. The work is an exploration of resilience and continuity and the vital role of caregivers in nurturing life beyond loss.
In HEAL: Repair+, curated by Hans Tan (Hans Tan Studio), we were privileged to be one of eight artists and designers selected to contribute to this meaningful project. Our focus was a kokedama—an ornamental Japanese moss-covered soil ball owned by Jie Yi that had lost its vitality but carried deep emotional meaning. Guided by her story, we created a dynamic NFT that evolves over time, reflecting cycles of growth, decay, and renewal. Tied to real-world time, it mirrors life’s transformations with a day-to-night cycle. We hope this digital recreation preserves her story while giving it new life in the digital realm. This exhibition was part of Singapore Design Week 2024 (DesignSingapore).
